I challenge notions of U.S. iconography, rejecting racist and elitist images that intend to eclipse my own history and its heroes. Thus my paintings reveal and celebrate these heroes and their legacies continuously. Within my work, each figure depicted—whether a freedom fighter, a spiritual deity or my mom— is disenfranchised, battling to rise above. I portray these figures as warriors, as goddesses and gods in their own right.
