Lucumi

1995
Oil on museum board
14" x 11"

This oil sketch was painted using a palette knife instead of a brush. Lucumi refers to the name taken on by people in Cuba who represented various West African ethnicities, including the Yoruba. The Lucumi are believed to have preserved the traditions presently known as Santeria. The text on the image, "Ritmo Africano de mi origen Lucumi" (African rhythm of my Lucumi origins or heritage), are lyrics from the song Tawiri by the Afro-Cuban group, Clave y Guaguanco.
